CPM 154: The Blade Steel That Makes the Urban G10 Series So Unique
January 28, 2022
Some say it is because of the mirror like blade finish on the Milspec model, and some say it is the small size matched with the heavy duty utility it offers. Both of these attributes are spot on, but we think it is the blade steel: CPM 154. Lately, we have been getting a lot of questions on this blade, so we decided to break down why this off-the-radar steel is so unique.
Read on for some CPM 154 facts and reasons users are raving about the Urban in G10. Pictured from top to bottom are the Triple Black, the OD Green, and the Milspec models.
CPM 154 Blade Steel: Quick Facts
CPM 154 is made by Crucible Industries. For the steel nerds, here is the full data sheet.
Crucible Industries is a legendary American steel manufacturer with over a century of experience. They hold numerous patents on their products and methods - as far back as 1905.
The CPM stands for “Crucible Particle Metallurgy”, which is is a method of producing higher alloyed grades of superior quality than could be accomplished through conventional steelmaking.
Crucible took 154CM and improved it with their Crucible Particle Metallurgy (CPM) process to make CPM 154.
It has much finer grain than the original 154CM, which results in improved toughness and edge retention.
It looks good and is easy to sharpen.
Because it has Chromium and Molybdenum in it, you can get a really nice polished finish (which is exactly what we did on the Milspec model).

Learn about the legendary man, Billy Waugh and see the knife he inspired: The RYP and Bill Harsey Designed, Billy Waugh DEMO Folder.
RYP first met Billy when he was writing his book Licensed to Kill, Hired Guns in The War on Terror. Driving his cop Harley across the country during the winter, Billy graciously took out time from his wedding day to meet at the local Waffle House.
The two men - one an author, and one an operator, both veterans of numerous hot spots often at the same time - hit it off immediately. They have been fast friends ever since.
